Author Engages the College Community at PC Writer and Poets Speaker Series Event

Porterville College's Writer and Poets Speaker Series hosted a memorable event on March 27th, featuring Heather McGhee, renowned author and advocate for solutions to inequality in America. The event drew a large crowd of students, faculty, and staff, both in person and via Zoom, creating a vibrant space for dialogue and engagement.
McGhee, whose book "The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together" has garnered widespread acclaim, shared insights from her work and engaged in thoughtful discussions with attendees. "The Sum of Us" spent ten weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was long-listed for the National Book Award and the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, among other honors. It has also been adapted into a Spotify podcast by Higher Ground, the production company of Barack and Michelle Obama, and a young adult version was released in February 2023.
Throughout the event, McGhee explored themes of inequality, systemic racism, and the potential for collective prosperity through the unique lens of her background experience. Attendees were captivated by her ability to connect complex issues to everyday experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges facing our society and the pathways toward a more equitable future. The interactive Q&A session allowed for a rich exchange of ideas, with students, faculty, and staff posing insightful questions and sharing their own perspectives.

McGhee's extensive background includes nearly two decades at the non-partisan think tank Demos, where she served four years as president. She has also testified in Congress, drafted legislation, and developed strategies for organizations and campaigns focused on improving the lives of millions. Additionally, she regularly appears in the media, elevating the concerns of working families.
